Magnolia Plantation

Image
Chase had mentioned he hadn't been to a plantation yet and would like to go so we headed to Magnolia Plantation today.  Picked him up bright and early - around 8:00 am. He was ready to go even though he had only gotten up about 15 minutes before we got there. He said picked up that talent in boot camp. Started with breakfast at First Watch, Chase had heard from a couple people that it was really good. I had a BEC sandwich - bacon, egg, and cheddar with arulgula and garlic aioli. Kurt had biscuits and gravy with million dollar bacon. Chase had a carrot cake and pecan pancake (it was HUGE), and million dollar bacon. All was delicious - good breakfast! Chase got free coffee for his military service. After breakfast we made our way to Magnolia. We were surprised by the line on a Monday! We got there a little after 10:00 and the next house tour open wasn't until 2:00. At first we were disappointed but there was plenty to do. First we walked around in the Wildlife Center. A small ...

Summerville

We had breakfast at the hotel today. Not real impressive but it did the trick. Just relaxed around the hotel today, read our books, and watched some TV. Attempted to go to Vicious Biscuit for lunch as I really want to try it but the line was out the door. We decided we didn't need to go that bad. Went to Soundwave Comics, wasn't the greatest comic book store I have been to and not the greatest neighborhood but Kurt still managed to find a couple books he couldn't seem to live without...  ;-) Left the comic book store and headed for Chase's apartment. Gorgeous place!!! It is pretty empty - they each have a bed, desk, and chair in their room and that's about it. One roommate stocked the kitchen so all set there but otherwise it's pretty bare. Need some furniture but hope they find some deals as they will need to turn around and get rid of it in 6 months. Oh well, they seem happy with it so that's all that matters! They have foosball, a pool table, ping pong ...

Sullivan's Island to Summerville

Image
Slept in a bit this morning until 8:00 and packed up the VRBO. Since we extended our stay in Charleston (and are so glad we did), we had to move. Now we’re at the Comfort Suites in Summerville, just 10 minutes from Chase’s apartment. Best part – I had enough points for two free nights! This morning we made our way to Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. This fort has been used from the Revolutionary War through World War II. There was a small museum at the visitors center with a video that talked of the history of the fort. Kurt and I both really enjoyed the fort. We agreed we preferred it to Fort Sumter. Not that I didn't enjoy Sumter but found Moultrie much more interesting. You could wander through the passageways below the battery where they stored the ammunition and above where the cannons/guns were. There was control post from World War II with many of the rooms/office furnished.  Huge container ship went by while we there After walking around in the base we walked the bea...

Graduation Day!!!!

Image
EARLY START to the big day!!! Chase texted at 4:15 this morning that he would be leaving in 15 minutes for so to head our way. Originally, he was just going to stay with us but decided to would be easier to just come in the morning. There was no limit to the number of people, just a limit to two cars. So his Dad got a parking pass and we got the other so he had to ride with us. As he is moved off the base now he no longer has a pass to park. We left the house about 5:45 as he was worried about traffic - there was no traffic so whizzed right onto base. We weren't the first ones there but it was close. Oh well, better early than late and we got great seats. The ceremony was great. There were 400 some graduates and it took a good two and a half hours. There were just two speakers and they were both good and not overly long. Most of the time was each sailor walking the stage. Family was invited to come up front to get pictures as they walked. The Captain shook every hand and waved to...

Drayton Hall

Image
Breakfast this morning was pastries from Evo Bakery. I had a bacon and cheese croissant and hot chocolate, Kurt a cherry turnover and cheese Danish. It was all great, nothing too exciting... After breakfast we headed from Drayton Hall. It is a plantation house that has been preserved, not restored. It was really cool. There are no furnishings in the house. There are constantly doing maintenance to preserve the house but that is all. If there is a missing emblem, they don't replace it, they keep the house as it is. They were actually working on the house when we were there. There is also an ongoing archeological dig where there were buildings in the past.  We took a tour of the house and then an audio tour of the grounds. I loved the house but unfortunately our tour guide was not so great. Oh well, the house was still amazing! The small building to the left is the privy. Quite interesting - it was a seven seater privy... I guess they didn't care as much about privacy as we do...
