Sullivan's Island to Summerville

Slept in a bit this morning until 8:00 and packed up the VRBO. Since we extended our stay in Charleston (and are so glad we did), we had to move. Now we’re at the Comfort Suites in Summerville, just 10 minutes from Chase’s apartment. Best part – I had enough points for two free nights!

This morning we made our way to Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. This fort has been used from the Revolutionary War through World War II. There was a small museum at the visitors center with a video that talked of the history of the fort. Kurt and I both really enjoyed the fort. We agreed we preferred it to Fort Sumter. Not that I didn't enjoy Sumter but found Moultrie much more interesting. You could wander through the passageways below the battery where they stored the ammunition and above where the cannons/guns were. There was control post from World War II with many of the rooms/office furnished.

Huge container ship went by while we there

After walking around in the base we walked the beach in front of the fort. It is not a swimming beach as I guess the riptides are really bad but we did seem a bunch of dolphins swimming off the shore. It was fun to watch them although they must be camera shy so had a hard time catching a picture of one. Managed a few glimpses...

Looking back at the fort from the beach. I love the picture with the church behind the cannons.

Left the fort and ready for some lunch. We went to Hometeam BBQ on a recommendation from the gentleman at the visitors center. Kurt had ribs and mac n cheese. I had a brisket taco, pork taco, and brisket chili. It was delicious!!!

After lunch we went back out to the beach. I am not sure if it was that we were a couple miles further up the island or the time but what a difference. The waves were really rolling. It was beautiful!

Left the beach behind and headed for Summerville. You could take the highway and get there in about 45 minutes or avoid highways and get there in about 1 1/2 hour. We of course avoided the highway! It was a great drive through the outskirts and Francis Marion National Forest. Stopped at an ice cream place I had read about - Alien Cow Flavored Sno. It has shaved ice where the flavor is added before freezing so it is more creamy and like ice cream then the usual snow cone. It was interesting. Glad we stopped.

Made our way to our hotel. Unpacked the car and put on feet up for just a bit. We got a HUGE room. Two queen beds, a sitting area with a couch and chair, and table with chairs. Corner room with three windows so nice and bright. The bathroom has double sinks - bigger than my bathroom at home!
Needed a little bite to eat and headed to Steel City Pizza. Busy place! We shared some parmesan dippers - fried pieces of dough that came with garlic butter and marinara for dipping. It was good, but nothing real special. The garlic butter was yummy though! We each just got a slice, really liked that you could just order by the slice, as neither of us super hungry. Kurt had Mega Meaty and I had Original White (olive oil, garlic, mozzarella, provolone, and parm cheese). The crust was super light and flaky. I loved it! Kurt said his was okay.
After eating we took a little drive. I thought Chase's apartment was close and ended up it was less than a mile away. Drove through the parking lot. Can't wait to see it tomorrow!
Back to hotel to some dumb movie Kurt picked out and some relax time. We started the day not sure what to do and had a great day!
