Race day
Breakfast this morning was the DonutConnection. It is a VERY good thing we don't have one of these in Pipestone! I had a Chocolate Croissant and a Chocolate Old Fashioned Donut.
After our nutritious breakfast we headed for the candy store. Can't believe how busy this place was already at 10:00 on a Sunday morning. Wandered around the aisles and check out the amazing assortment of stuff. We wondered if some of the odd things every really sold or if there were just for the novelty. We also wondered who goes to Minnesota's Largest Candy Store and gets plain M&Ms. Of course I went to the candy store and didn't get candy. Got a treat for Mom and Dad, a sticker for my Stanley, Gouda cheese flavored pretzels, chocolate peanut butter popcorn, and dark chocolate covered pretzel crisps.
Next I tried to take Kurt to a comic store but they didn't open until noon so we were too early. Instead we went to Jimmy John's for lunch and back to the hotel to meet with Chase. It was perfect timing - we pulled in right after him.
We up to the room for just a bit and headed off for Cantebury. Races started at 1:00 and we got there about 12:15. I was amazed by the amount of people! We decided to start the day off waiting at where they walk to horses around to show everyone so you can 'judge' the horse before you go place your bets. They just walk them around a couple times before the jockeys get on and they head for the track. So we headed to the other side to watch the race. There was a total of 8 horse races, a combination of on the turf and dirt. After race 3 they had the camel race, race 5 was ostriches, and 7 were the zebras. Had a great time, although I learned I am REALLY bad at picking horses. I came in last in my picks with Chase and Kurt I think every time, and they came in last in the races a couple times. The camels and ostriches were so cute running but the zebras were hilarious. They took off but about 10-20 feet from the finish line they all just stopped. Took a bit before they could get the moving again to finish the race. We were going to leave after the zebra race but it seemed like most others decided that too. So we sat and watched them bring out the horses for the final race. When they headed for the race track we decided to go. Great timing as the early rush had left and they final rush was watching the last race.
We went to Badger Hill Brewing for a drink as it was across the street from the track. We each had one drink, they were pretty good. Chase had a Peanut Butter Stout - can't believe he likes that dark stuff! Went back to the hotel and Chase drove us all to dinner. Of all the places in the Cities we went back to O'Briens Public House! Chase wanted to try the pasta I had and Kurt said his BBQ was so good he wouldn't mind having it again so whatever. I actually had a chicken ceaser salad as nothing heavy sounded any good. Plus it sounded nutritious so I could have dessert! Which was FABULOUS!
