Fargo Bound

Kurt and I were in need of a getaway but didn't want to travel too far from home. So while most people go to the Caribbean in March we headed for Fargo...

Trip started off a little shaky when we went to drop off Buddy at his temporary home and I realized my credit card is missing. Went back home and searched to no avail. Pulled up my activity and the last place I used it was the grocery store. Gave them a call and sure enough I had left it there. Crisis averted!

After a quick stop to pick up my card we were on the road to Fargo. We had thought about taking the back roads but let's be honest - this drive isn't about the scenery. The fields look the same at 80 on the interstate as they do at 60 on the backroads. So we opted for the freeway.

Stopped in Watertown for lunch. I got a Minnesota Hop Passport for myself and there a few places in SD and IA included and a couple breweries in Watertown were in there. So not only do I get a stamp in my passport but you get a 2 for 1 beer. Went to Dempsey's Brewing Company as it's the second oldest brewery in South Dakota. They had a pi special for March 14 - a plain cheese pizza for 3.14. We had a couple beers and decided to pay full price to get pepperoni and sausage on our pizza. Was quite interesting to watch all the people that came in for the special though. At one point the line was to the hostess station. We saw an order for 22 pizzas go out and I think that really messed them out - I swear people had to wait close to an hour for their pizzas. Some people were getting quite irritated but most took the wait well. The pizza was very good! Was a good stop, as we weren't in any hurry we didn't mind the wait.

Back on the road for Fargo. Made the mistake of not stopping when we saw a bathroom and there are not a lot of stops on the way to Fargo. We saw a sign for a rest stop but it seemed closed. Could still pull in so we thought we would check it out as someone we will not name really had to go. Ended up it was just a port-a-potty on the side of the interstate. But when you have to go you have to go. Kurt reported that actually it wasn't that bad so I decided maybe I should check it out just to be safe. I have to agree, relatively clean for just a blue box on the side of the road!

Got to town and decided to head for Junkyard Brewery first. I had read about this place and one site rated it was the best brewery in Minnesota. So I was excited to check it out. Thought we would stop for a drink and if we liked it we could check in to the hotel and Uber back. Must say I was disappointed. Was a cute place but wasn't blown away by the beers. Glad we stopped first and didn't waste time taking an Uber out there. I did like that they had a half pour though so I could have a small one as I was driving.

After Junkyard headed for the hotel and checked in. Nice place right downtown. Unloaded the car and relaxed for a couple minutes and headed out for dinner. Although neither of us was super hungry thought it best to eat a bit. We went to Beer & Fish Company. I had the walleye fingers and Kurt they walleye filet. Excellent fish, chips, and coleslaw. HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you are ever in the Fargo area! We shared a Taste of Fargo beer flight and neither of was real impressed with the beers... Should have just skipped the beer and stuck with the fish!

Walked a couple blocks down the road and hit the comic book store. I asked Kurt if I needed to take his credit card away but he actually didn't do too bad. He has been into some type of comic magazine for the 70s (I think...) and they had some there.

From the comic book store we walked to Front Street Taproom for one drink the JL Burger and Beers for one. Interesting side note - this is the original JL! I downloaded an app from the Fargo Visitor Bureau where if you visit 6 different locations on their app you get a free t-shirt. My mission this weekend is to get a free t-shirt! So, the stops at Front Street and JL even though I think we both could have headed back to the hotel after supper! 3 of 6 locations down for my shirt!

Realized our day today was basically food and beer but I like food and I like beer!

  1. I think it's pretty cool that you two don't need to go to the Caribbean to have fun. You just make the best out of any place you go. Have a super time eating food and drinking beer!!
