St Joseph, MO

Slept in this morning! Didn't get up until almost 7:30! Yes, I take joy in the little things! We had breakfast at the hotel. It was pretty good actually, Kurt had biscuits and gravy and I made myself a breakfast sandwich. Packed up and headed to the Patee House Museum and Jesse James House. The Patee House was many things in the past - a hotel, Pony Express office, a women's college, a shirt factory and I am sure other things I am not remembering. It is now a museum of pretty much everything. Three floors packed full of stuff! I told Kurt it made me think of someone saying "What should we do with all Aunt Ruby's old junk and someone told them - donate it to the museum"! It was interesting but So Much Stuff. There was an area that had old carriages and a train engine and mail car; an area dedicated to the Pony Express; an area that was fashioned after walking down main street St Joseph; replica of hotel rooms; and on and on and on.  The Ice Cream Shop The doors wer...

Missouri State Petitionary

Our downstairs neighbors arrived - in the middle of the night with a lot of slamming doors... Thankfully it ended soon and otherwise slept fairly well. Still awake at 6:00... This morning was a chocolate croissant at the High Rise Bakery again. It was easy and right on the way to today's destination! Kurt had a cinnamon roll again. The croissant was SOOO good! I actually think I preferred the chocolate hazelnut - the plain chocolate was almost too sweet. But still delicious! So buttery and lamination to make Paul and Prue proud!   Our destination for today was the Missouri State Penitentiary. We had actually planned to come here in 2019 when we took a Missouri trip with Chase but there had been a tornado a couple weeks before we went that damaged the prison so it was closed to tours. The prison first opened in 1836 and didn't close until 2004. When it closed it was the oldest operating penal facility west of the Mississippi - it was actually the first prison west of the Miss...

Jefferson City

Good evening! Spent a great day wandering Jefferson City today. Slept until almost 7:00 so that's progress! Got ready and headed out bright and early another, beautiful day in Jefferson City! Started the morning at High Rise Bakery - chocolate hazelnut croissant and a cinnamon roll. Both were delicious! After breakfast we headed for the Museum of Missouri Military History. The museum was a couple miles out of town on an army training facility. Was a pretty drive but sadly when we arrived this is what we found... No details on if it is closed for an hour, a day, the week... Thankfully they did have an outdoor area that we wandered, which honestly was quite neat. Didn't quite make up for the museum being closed but still enjoyed. You could actually go in this plane. Was really cool inside, but I don't think I would want to fly in one! Is hard to see but to the left is a rack to hang stretchers for the injured. After the closed museum we went a couple more miles out of town to...

Kansas City to Jefferson City

Good morning! Good sleep other than the 1:00 am door banging. Up at 6:00 am - still not adjusted to this time change! Decided on City Diner for breakfast. It's a little over a mile from the hotel and after a day in the car I needed to move so Kurt agreed to walk with me. It was a great walk! They have a Riverfront Trail along the Missouri and we took that. Walked under this really neat lift bridge for the train tracks. Kurt was a little nervous walking under the weights - you would definitely splat! There was a mural wall with all different panels.  Quite a few joggers and dog walker on the trail. Gorgeous morning for a walk! Breakfast was pretty good too! Walked back to hotel to pack up. As we are not used to this dumb time change we had to waste some time before the museum opened at 10:00. Packed up and relaxed for a bit before the one mile drive to Arabia Steamboat Museum (actually was across the street from where we had breakfast and we didn't even notice...). The Arabia...
