Kansas City to Jefferson City
Good morning! Good sleep other than the 1:00 am door banging. Up at 6:00 am - still not adjusted to this time change!
Decided on City Diner for breakfast. It's a little over a mile from the hotel and after a day in the car I needed to move so Kurt agreed to walk with me. It was a great walk! They have a Riverfront Trail along the Missouri and we took that. Walked under this really neat lift bridge for the train tracks. Kurt was a little nervous walking under the weights - you would definitely splat! There was a mural wall with all different panels. Quite a few joggers and dog walker on the trail. Gorgeous morning for a walk!
Breakfast was pretty good too!
Walked back to hotel to pack up. As we are not used to this dumb time change we had to waste some time before the museum opened at 10:00. Packed up and relaxed for a bit before the one mile drive to Arabia Steamboat Museum (actually was across the street from where we had breakfast and we didn't even notice...). The Arabia was a steamboat that sank on the Missouri after snagging a walnut tree that was submerged in the river in 1856. In 1988 a local man heard about the story and started searching for the wreckage with his sons. Due to the shifting of the river the sunken ship was actually a half mile from the river buried 45 feet below the surface in the middle of a corn field. Once they found the location and had it mapped out they completed the excavation in 4 1/2 months. Was a very interesting museum on the search, excavation, and restoration of the cargo. Highly recommend!
Excavation
The hull of the ship - largest piece they were able to remove
The only casualty of the sinking, a mule. His remains were found during the excavation.
The walnut that sunk the ship.
There was an earlier excavation attempt but all they were looking for was the alcohol. After three attempts found no liquor they abandoned their attempts. This was the only alcohol found in the excavation.

And before restoration
Spent a couple hours at the museum then headed for Columbia and the Rock Bridge Memorial State Park. I am spoiled in Pipestone - do not enjoy this traffic! We were here before when we did a Missouri road trip with Chase many years ago... It was interesting enough for a second stop and Missouri State Parks are free so good chance to get out and stretch the legs! A little past the colors in the park but was still a good walk.
Once we unpacked the car and checked out our airbnb (including the stocked beer fridge with complimentary drinks!) we walked to Paddy Malone's for an early supper. I had read great review and it was recommended by our airbnb host. It was okay, nothing special. I had the pork tenderloin sandwich and Kurt a brat. After supper we walked to Whiskey Bar for a night cap and shared the churros. They were delicious!
Walked back to our little home away from home for an early evening relaxing. Maybe tomorrow we will adjust!
Good day two!!!
